AURORA LOOM
Four strands of northern light

Every crossing leaves a pattern

Weave a little
northern light.

Eight rows. Four colors. A pocketful of thread. Choose where each new strand crosses over and under, follow the pattern, and give your ribbon a sound structure.

Your loom

Practice ribbon

The four vertical warp colors stay fixed. Your horizontal weft shows in exactly two chosen columns; the other two show the warp. The dashed row is a free preview.

Horizontal texture / O = weft over. Vertical texture / U = warp showing. Letters: A amber, T teal, V violet, R rose. A matching color can hide an over/under difference, so check the O/U marks.

Binding rule: in every column, three consecutive rows may never be all over or all under. Every strand needs both kinds of crossing.

The whole pattern is visible. Save the right colors and keep the next crossing possible.

The pattern chart

All eight rows visible

Match each cell’s visible color, whether it comes from the warp or the weft. The outlined row is next. Some wishes compete with the thread budget and binding rule; partial credit counts.

Balanced structure

Finish with exactly four over and four under in a column to earn four points for that column. These counts refer to crossings, not visible colors.

Why matching colors still need crossing marks

An amber weft over an amber warp still looks amber. But an over crossing and an under crossing are structurally different: they count toward binding and final balance differently. The loom always displays O/U labels and exact crossing counts.

Weave by command

Eight thoughtful decisions

weave amber 13 means amber weft over columns 1 and 3, under 2 and 4.
Free: preview weave teal 24, state, pattern, moves, help. Spaces or commas between columns also work.

Legal rows with exact previews

A short ribbon, an exact score

  • The four warp colors are fixed. Each of the four weft colors starts with two lengths. Every row spends one length of its chosen weft.
  • Pick exactly two different columns where weft goes over. Those two cells show your weft color. The other cells show their warp color.
  • A column may never be all over or all under for three consecutive rows. The complementary crossing pattern is always legal, so you can always complete the ribbon.
  • Earn 3 points per matching cell. If all four colors match the chart on a row, add 4 exact-row points. Unmatched cells score zero.
  • After exactly eight rows, each column with four over / four under crossings adds 4 balance points. Balance points are only awarded at the end.
  • All three editions are fully visible. There is no clock, hidden thread, undo or early finish. A preview spends nothing. An invalid row changes nothing.
